HAHNEMÜHLE a passion for paper over 400 years in the making
PAPER MANUFACTURING WITH THE SPIRIT OF THE FOUNDING FATHERS
There are very few companies around the world that can be proud of a history as long and prestigious as Hahnemühle’s. Founded back in 1584 as a paper mill in South Lower Saxony’, Hahnemühle developed – strictly according to the spirit laid down by its founding fathers – into a customer-oriented and innovative manufacturing facility.
Unsurprisingly, the products and manufacturing methods have changed to some extent since 1584. The original product range consisted solely of mould-made writing paper, which subsequently led to the addition of artist paper.
THE MORE THINGS CHANGE, THE MORE THEY STAY THE SAME
While the products produced by Hahnemühle have evolved over the years, several things have remained the same. None more so than an insistence that historical quality standards are maintained to guarantee customers the purest papers for artistic and technical applications.
Hahnemühle paper technologists are experts in their trade, utilising traditional formulations and skills to produce traditional artist papers, Fine Art inkjet papers, and speciality papers for the industry. For centuries, papers characterised by the ‘Rooster’ have been used by many artists who rely on the consistently high quality of fine art inkjet papers produced under the world-leading Hahnemühle name.
STILL LOOKING GOOD AFTER ALL THESE YEARS
Unlike the author of this page, Hahnemühle's papers are highly resistant to ageing. In its most basic definition, the most sustainable paper is one which stands the test of time! Hahnemühle papers will last for generations as they meet the exacting requirements of ISO standard 9706 for ageing resistance of paper and extreme light fastness. If kept in museum conditions, your print should last hundreds of years.
RESPECT FOR THE PAST WITH AN ENVIRONMENTAL MANIFESTO FOR THE FUTURE
Hahnemühle has continued to respect the environment and has used only pure spring water since 1584. The water drawn from Hahnemühle’s own artesian wells needs no treatment and is free from chemical cleaning agents, biocides and preservatives.
Hahnemühle also only uses primary paper pulp from sustainable and FSC—or PEFC-certified wood plantations, where 3 -4 trees are replanted for every tree harvested. In addition, Hahnemühle’s tree-free Natural Line paper family has continued to expand since its introduction in 2008.
Hahnemühle Bamboo was the original pioneer for natural papers. In addition, re-invented hemp fibres plus Agave and Sugar Cane fibres are used for natural line digital fine art printing papers.
Unsurprisingly, the products and manufacturing methods have changed to some extent since 1584. The original product range consisted solely of mould-made writing paper, which subsequently led to the addition of artist paper.
SUSTAINABLE AND SOMEWHAT SURPRISING INNOVATION
Maybe the most surprising aspect of Hahnemühle's papers is that they are all vegan! As early as 1965, Hahnemühle was the first paper manufacturer worldwide to produce exclusively vegan papers. International regulatory authorities have even approved them for use in food-contact papers.
Hahnemühle is also revolutionising the Photo Paper market with the world´s first PE-free photo paper. Hahnemühle Sustainable Photo Satin is the alternative to PE-based inkjet photo papers.
This newly developed paper, with a bio inkjet barrier coating, is free of plastic composites, making it 100% recyclable. Hahnemühle Sustainable Photo was tested under lab conditions and detected zero plastic. This paper is a first in the industry and demonstrates Hahnemühle´s continual efforts to reduce the environmental footprint of its products.
LITTLE RED ROOSTER - OR GREEN IF YOU PREFER!
The Red Rooster has long been the instantly recognisable trademark of Hahnemühle. You may also see the Green Rooster appearing on many Hahnemühle products. The Green Rooster initiative, another unique innovation in the industry, supports environmental projects and social initiatives on a regional, national, and international scale.
A share of the profits from Hahnemühle’s Natural Line papers supports reforestation, species protection, ocean clean-up projects, biodiversity conservation campaigns, and educational programmes, evidence of Hahnemühle's continued corporate social responsibility.
Dupli are proud to be a Hahnemühle Prestige Partner.
