LOMOGRAPHY the new’ish kids on the block
SO, WHAT THE HELL IS LOMOGRAPHY?
We’re glad you asked, although it’s not an easy answer to give, as Lomography is as much a photographic community as it is a photographic brand. But the real roots of Lomography can be found in early 80’s Russia.
General Igor Petrowitsch Kornitzky, of the USSR Minister of Defense and Industry, introduced a small compact Japanese camera (the Cosina CX-1) to his comrade, Michail Panfilowitsch Panfiloff, Director of the LOMO Russian Arms and Optical factory.
The pair quickly realised the potential of this beautifully manufactured camera and challenged the LOMO PLC factory in St. Petersburg, to build an improved version. The result was the first working sample of the LOMO LC-A and the seeds of Lomography were sown.
HELLO WORLD, THIS IS VIENNA CALLING
In 1984, the LOMO LC-A went into mass production but it was in 1991, in the Czech capital Prague that a group of Viennese students discovered the camera in an old photographic store. Back in Vienna, the rolls of film developed and the door to a world of beautiful highly saturated images was opened. Word spread amongst friends, family and the academic fraternity, resulting in demand for their own LOMO cameras.
In ‘92 the Lomographic Society International was launched along with the now legendary ‘10 Golden Rules of Lomography’ and The Lomography Manifesto. Vienna embraced this new venture and the city council provided an empty house that would become the centre of all Lomographic operations and hosted the very first Lomography exhibition where 700 LOMO LC-A cameras were sold.
Things started to move quickly and in 1994 the website Lomo.com was launched with exhibitions held simultaneously in New York and Moscow.
NEW CENTURY AND LOMOGRAPHY HITS TOP GEAR
As the 90’s step aside to allow the noughties to step into the spotlight, Lomography wasted no time in pressing forward with their vision for an avant garde photographic movement. The first official Lomography store was opened in Vienna in 2001 followed by a constant stream of new product development and activities across the globe.
Part of the Lomography marketing strategy, along with opening more stores across Europe and the Far East, was the regular introduction of quirky designs, special edition cameras and notable collaborations including the rock band White Stripes.
