ILFORD PHOTO seeing the world in Black & White

A HISTORY WITH MANY DEVELOPMENTS

Most of the origin story of ILFORD Photo can be understood by reading the history of ILFORD.

But it’s safe to say that ILFORD Photo are the pre-eminent name in the production and supply of products to the black and white photographic community and Dupli are proud to partner with them to bring these products to you.

INNOVATION IN PAPER

One of the key products for which ILFORD is still revered, is their range of Multigrade Black and White Darkroom papers. The origins of this ever popular paper dates back to 1940 and the pioneering work carried out by Frank Forster Renwick who look at commercialising the process patented in 1912 Rudolf Fischer.

We won’t risk boring you with all the details about how he developed the idea of using both blue sensitive emulsions and green sensitised emulsions of different contrasts to produce a black and white paper that varied in contrast depending upon the colour of the light used to expose it. But if that is of interest, you can read more in Simon Hill’s excellent article on the RPS website here.

The ILFORD Multigrade paper brand and portfolio has continued to be developed (see what we did there) over the years with new papers added on a regular basis, maintaining its position as one of the most popular photo paper brands worldwide.

AT THE HEART OF THE FILM INDUSTRY

Another area in which ILFORD have been synonymous with over many decades is photographic film and in particular, black and white film. Development and innovation have been at the forefront of ILFORD’s photographic film business and contributed to them receiving the Queens Award to Industry in 1970.

Alongside their popular HP and FP film ranges, ILFORD were responsible for introducing the world’s first Chromogenic film in 1980. The original XP1 has now been superseded by the XP2. Additional ranges such as Delta and Pan F films have been added over the years as ILFORD cemented their place as the leaders in Black and White film manufacture and supply.

The acquisition of Kentmere Photographic in 2007 allowed for the Kentmere range of Black and White paper and films to be added to the already impressive film portfolio.

CHEMICAL ATTRACTION TO NEW OWNERS

If being at the heart of the Black and White photographic paper and film industry wasn’t enough, ILFORD are also one of the world’s leading brands for Black and White photo chemistry. With a full range of fixers, developers and associated products, ILFORD have a fully rounded comprehensive portfolio of black and white products, the envy of the photographic world.

It’s no wonder that when the opportunity for a management buyout became an option in 2005, it was grabbed with both hands and ILFORD Photo became part of the Harman Technology family.

ILFORD Photo continue to be a leading light in the world of Black and White photography and our partnership with them allows us to bring you the very best of their broad portfolio.
