FOMA a range of photo products you should definitely Czech out
A BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY
Back in 1919, in the area of Czechoslovakia previously known as Bohemia, two engineers Evžen Schier and J. Bárta founded a company to produce photographic plates which would be sold under the brand name Ibis.
Two years later the company moved east to Hradec Králové and changed its name to Fotochema. By this time, photo chemicals had been added to the product mix and would be followed in 1931 by their first forays into the world of photographic papers. The manufacture of black & white photographic film quickly followed in 1933.
CARRYING ON AS IF NOTHING REALLY MATTERS
The years of conflict that followed across Europe, did little to deter the business from pushing forward with plans to add more products to their portfolio. In 1949, x-ray products were added and, as the new decade approached, additional products including graphic films for the print industry, black and white cinematographic films and 35mm perforated films expanded the Foma range.
IT’S NOT TOO LATE, COLOURS TIME HAS COME
Whilst the business until the late 50’s had concentrated on black & white photographic products, in 1958, the company announced they would commence the production of high-quality Fomacolor colour papers. The trend towards colour continued with colour negative films being added in 1964 and Fomachrom colour reversal slide film in 1971.
Buoyed by the success of the expanded portfolio, the next two decades were based on consolidation followed by expansion via proprietary research and development particularly in the areas of aerial photography and industrial x-ray products.
EASY COME EASY GO, BLACK & WHITE’S THE WAY TO GO
As the colour film market became competitive in a shrinking market, the company decided to concentrate on where their expertise lay, namely x-ray and black & white products.
In 1995, the state-owned Fomachema was privatised, and Foma Bohemia Ltd. was established, thereby closing the circle on the company's early days. Dupli is proud to be authorised suppliers of a wide range of Foma black-and-white film and chemistry products.
